Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Mount Holyoke, Worcester State to Reach 20 Wins

BABSON PARK, Mass.—The Babson College women's volleyball team concluded the regular season with a pair of three-set victories over Mount Holyoke College and Worcester State University on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium. The Beavers defeated the Lyons in the conference finale for both teams, 25-12, 25-9, 25-22, and then downed the Lancers, 25-19, 25-15, 25-12.

Babson, which is ranked fourth in the NCAA regional rankings, improves to 20-8 overall and finishes New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at 8-2. The Beavers will be the third seed when the conference tournament begins next week. Mount Holyoke ends its year at 8-15 overall and 1-9 in league play, while Worcester State is now 21-10 on the year.

Sophomore Gaby Miller (Miami, Fla.) led all players with 12 kills, junior Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) contributed 25 assists and six kills, and senior Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore Rachel Williams (Chicago, Ill.) each added five kills apiece for the Green and White. Senior Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) registered a team-high 14 kills and classmate Catherine Hunter (Duxbury, Mass.) chipped in with four kills and two blocks in the victory.

Senior Sarah Caggiano (Leonardtown, Md.) and classmate Jamesa Allen (Orlando, Fla.) finished with eight and seven kills apiece for the Lyons. Sophomore Brayden Walden (McKinney, Texas) dished out 15 assists and senior Cameron Graham (Sarasota, Fla.) led all players with 15 digs.

The Beavers put away 15 kills against just one error in the opening set and hit .478 while recording 12 more kills in the second to take a commanding 2-0 lead. Mount Holyoke led by as many as five early in the third set and were up 18-14 after a kill by Caggiano before Babson rallied to complete the sweep.

The hosts used kills from four different players and an ace from Miller to tie the stanza at 20 and went in front for good at 23-22 on a kill by Cameron.

Sophomore Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) led all players with 14 kills and Miller added 11 in Babson's three-set sweep of the Lancers. Cameron finished with 22 assists, Beecher had 15 digs and the trio of Roseen, Puccio and first-year Lauren Gold (Miami Beach, Fla.) recorded three blocks apiece.

Senior Emily Carens (Northborough, Mass.) and junior Stephanie Chapin (Hampden, Mass.) recorded eight and six kills, respectively, to lead Worcester State. Senior Megan Leavens (Storrs, Conn.) led all players with 23 digs and senior Allie Nolan (Melrose, Mass.) finished with 17 assists.

Puccio and Miller combined for nine of Babson's 14 first-set kills, and the hosts raced out to an 11-3 lead in game two as Beecher, Cameron and Miller combined for four early service aces. The Beavers led by as many as 11 in the middle frame and hit .216 as a team.

The Green and White dominated the third set after running out to an 8-2 advantage. The Lancers cut their deficit to four twice, but the Beavers responded with kills from Puccio and Gold and an ace from first-year Maddie Malee (Orlando, Fla.) as part of a 6-0 run to pushed the lead back to 10.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts sixth-seeded Coast Guard in a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal.

• The Beavers are now 17-16 all-time against Mount Holyoke and 13-0 against Worcester State.
• Babson has now won at least 20 matches in five of the last seven seasons.
