Men's Lacrosse Drops Regular Season Finale at Coast Guard, 14-11

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior Benner Geurtsen (Rodman, N.Y.) scored five of his game-high six goals in the second half to help the Coast Guard Academy defeat visiting Babson College, 14-11, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

Babson, which has dropped three straight games, closes the regular season at 8-5 overall and 4-3 in league play, while Coast Guard (13-3, 6-1 NEWMAC) won for the 10th time in 11 games to capture its second straight NEWMAC regular season title. The Beavers will be the fifth seed in next week's conference tournament.

Junior Owen Allen (Franklin, Mass.) finished with four goals and one assist, while senior Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) scored three times for the Beavers. First-year Jack Gregory (Mendham, N.J.) won 13-of-28 face-offs and junior Christopher Aranalde (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) made 10 saves to go along with team highs of five ground balls and two caused turnovers in the loss.

Sophomore Matty Johnson (Westport, Conn.) scored three times, senior Anthony Wyler (Fulton, Md.) had two goals and junior Riley McNulty (Annapolis, Md.) dished out five assists for the Bears. Senior Colin Cashin (Bedford, N.H.) won 15-of-28 face-offs and scooped up a game-high 10 ground balls, while senior Trey Johnson (Millersville, Md.) made nine saves to earn the win.

Coast Guard led 3-0 after the first quarter and extended the margin to 4-0 on Wyler's tally 2:21 into the second before the Green and White rattled off seven of the game's next eight goals. Sophomore Alex Lesher (Scottsdale, Ariz.) got the Beavers on the board at 10:37 of the second and Allen scored twice before halftime to pull them within one at the break.

Senior Jack Pope (San Diego, Calil.) scored 14 seconds into the third quarter for the Bears, but Mishkind scored three times in the span of 1:24 and sophomore Mason O'Hanlon (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) capped a four-goal run that put Babson in front 7-5 with 7:26 to go in the stanza. The lead was still two after sophomore Ethan Carpenter's (Orlando, Fla.) scored at the 5:49 before Coast Guard answered with five straight goals over the next 11 minutes.

Johnson scored three times and Geurtsen added a pair of markers as the Bears built an 11-8 edge with 8:27 to go in the game. Allen and Carpenter scored back-to-back goals to get back within two with 3:42 left after Coast Guard had matched its biggest lead of the afternoon, but the Beavers lost the ensuing face-off and committed a turnover once they finally regained possession with less than a minute to play.

Babson will travel to fourth-seeded Clark on Tuesday in a NEWMAC Tournament quarterfinal at a time to be determined, while Cost Guard will face the winner of that contest on Thursday.
