NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Senior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) became the first female in Babson College history to earn all-conference honors for the third time with her 12th-place finish at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon at Smith College. Capalbo helped the Beavers come in ninth in the women's meet, while the Babson men finished fifth.
Capalbo posted her second-fastest time of the season on Saturday, completing the 5k course in a time of 19:01 to make the all-league squad for the third consecutive season. Junior Kelli Halligan (Melrose, Mass.) finished with a time of 21:00 to come in 62nd overall, while first-year Melanie Plattner (Fort Lee, N.J.) had a strong NEWMAC Championship debut, coming in 72nd with a time of 21:23.
In the men's half of the meet, the Beavers finished fifth or better for the sixth consecutive season at the conference meet going back to 2009. Senior Mark Gulesian (Miami, Fla.) came in 18th overall on the 8k course, falling just short of making the all-league team for the second time in his career. First-year Jonathan Miller (Westford, Mass.) had a tremendous NEWMAC Championship debut, finishing 34th with a time of 27:22.
Junior Ian MacLean (South Hamilton, Mass.) was 36th overall with a time of 27:24, while sophomore Will Nemeth (Coplay, Pa.) finished 43rd with a time of 27:42. First-year Scott Atwood (West Newbury, Mass.) came in with a time of 28:48 to finish in the 64th position, classmate Ryan Colaco (Danville, Calif.) completed the course in 28:57 to post a 69th-place finish, and sophomore Tim Hatzopoulos (Park Ridge, Ill.) was 74th with a time of 29:07.
Babson will take next Saturday off before returning to action at the NCAA New England Regional Championships hosted by Williams College on Saturday, November 15. The men's 8k race will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the women's 6k race at 12:30 p.m.
